Strategic Positioning of Michigan State University

Contextual Learning

Contextual learning is defined not only by the place but also by the translation of knowledge to the specific environment.

It requires students to consider the natural, social, and human-built factors of the environment that determine whether a particular response or performance is appropriate, ethical, and responsible in the environment.

Example of Contextual Learning at MSU

The Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement is committed to empowering students with service and civic-based educational opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.  One such project, is the Small Town Design Initiative, provides small communities in Michigan with physical environmental design assistance in community development and land use. The initiative is a collaboration of MSU Extension, MSU Outreach, the College of Social Science, and the Landscape Architecture Program.
