Strategic Positioning of Michigan State University

Discovery-centered Learning

Discovery-centered learning encourages students to produce original work that contributes to the knowledge or activity of a particular discipline or disciplines.

It is research in the broadest sense—finding or creating something new that expands a working body of knowledge—and both develops and relies upon strong faculty-student mentoring relationship.

Example of Discovery-centered Learning at MSU

The Program for Undergraduate Research in the Life Sciences is a four-year program that introduces students with minimal research experience in science to the concept of research through a seminar, field experiences, and laboratory rotations across campus. Years three and four involve a paid lab internship with a mentor.
